Department of State will allocate $1,000 million in aid to the new government of Colombia
Through an injection of $1 billion in support for Colombia, the Trump administration intends to combat drug trafficking in South America
After Abelardo de la Espriella officially assumed the presidency of Colombia, the Department of State (DOS) announced that it intends to allocate $1 billion dollars to the South American nation with the aim of strengthening security in its territory and to combat drug producers as well as distributors.
Through a meticulous plan, it is contemplated to begin the eradication of coca crops and cocaine interdiction operations, as well as closing the way to finances linked to criminal organizations which are already considered by Washington as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTO).
In exchange for this, the Trump administration undertakes to provide financial, technological resources and advice aimed at recovering state control of territories dominated by armed groups.
Through coordinated operations with the US military and police forces, Washington also offers to protect minors from forced recruitment.
For Donald Trump, this represents a good opportunity to rebuild the relationship between the United States and Colombia, since until a few weeks ago, still with former president Gustavo Petro at the head of the country, disagreements on immigration and security issues were constant.
“With more than 200 years of friendship, the Trump administration looks forward to working closely with the new administration to ensure the security and prosperity of the United States, Colombia, and our hemisphere,” indicates a statement released by the DOS.
Accordingly, Colombia will once again join the so-called Shield of the Americas, a security initiative and a political-military coalition promoted by the US government under the Trump administration.
It should be noted that, in order to materialize the offer of aid directed to the Colombian government, the approval of the US Congress is first necessary at a complex time for the economy.
