Fourth of July fireworks raise air pollution in Southern California
Authorities warn of high levels of polluting particles that can affect health during celebrations
Fourth of July celebrations could bring more than just light shows to Southern California. Environmental authorities warned that fireworks will significantly raise air pollution levels, with health risks, especially for people with asthma, heart disease or respiratory problems.
According to information from the South Coast Air Quality Management District (South Coast AQMD) and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, concentrations of fine particles could reach levels considered dangerous between the afternoon of July 4 and July 5.
Smoke from fireworks worsens air quality
The South Coast AQMD reported that July 4 and 5 typically see some of the worst air quality levels of the year due to intense pyrotechnic activity.
Areas with the greatest expected impact include the eastern San Gabriel Valley, Pomona, Ontario, parts of Riverside, Rancho Cucamonga, as well as northern Orange County and parts of Los Angeles County. In other regions, such as Long Beach and downtown Los Angeles, air quality could also deteriorate, although to a lesser extent.
“Public displays and household fireworks contribute to particle pollution and can generate localized concentrations of harmful pollutants,” South Coast AQMD warned.
Fine particles pose a health risk
Authorities explained that the smoke released by fireworks contains fine particles, metals and other contaminants that can remain suspended in the air for several hours.
According to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, breathing these particles can cause coughing, difficulty breathing, decreased lung function, asthma attacks, and even increase the risk of heart attacks in vulnerable people.
For its part, the American Lung Association noted that fireworks launched at homes may represent a greater risk, since the contaminants remain closer to the ground and are more easily inhaled.
As a preventive measure, authorities recommend staying indoors, keeping doors and windows closed, avoiding outdoor physical activities, and using air purifiers or air conditioning when possible.
