The facilities in Cali, the capital of the Valle del Cauca section and one of the cities most affected by the earthquake that erupted on Monday, issued a red alert because they were at 100 % of power.

According to the state's Health Secretary, Germán Escobar, at least 26 people died and 456 were injured in Cali after the earthquake, which required the evacuation of four big medical facilities.

A flap of one of the major high-complexity care facilities in Cali was partially destroyed by the 7. 4 magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia at 7:14 a. m. local time and left at least 134 people dying throughout the nation.

Structural damage in other clinics

The Nuestra Cali Clinic, the Dessa Clinic and the Colombia Clinic also present structural damage.

The authorities ordered surgeries, outpatient consultations and priority consultations that were not extremely urgent to be canceled and temporarily rescheduled, with the aim of freeing up capacity to care for those affected by the earthquake.

The earthquake had its epicenter in the municipality of San José del Palmar, in Chocó, at a depth of 103 kilometers, according to the Colombian Geological Service (SGC), and caused damage in much of the center and west of the country.

Dozens of collapsed buildings

In Cali there are also more than 30 collapsed buildings, several of them with people who remain trapped, which is why authorities warn that the number of fatalities could increase as search and rescue efforts progress.

So far, the national damage report is 1,575 damaged homes, 37 completely destroyed and 61 buildings collapsed, according to Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella, in his first public statement after the earthquake.
