Japan reactivates the world's largest nuclear power plant
The Kashiwazaki-Kariwa facility, the largest of its kind in the world, resumed operations for the first time since the Fukushima disaster
Despite frequent public issues, the largest nuclear power plant in the world, known as Kashiwazaki-Kariwa, resumed operations on Wednesday for the first time since the 2011 Fukushima crisis. Only one of the plant's seven reactors was restarted in the first phase, according to Tokyo Electric Power Company ( Tepco ), the facility's operator. According to Tatsuya Matoba, a spokeswoman for Tepco, the restart occurred at 7:02 p. m. local day, according to AFP's French news agency. Despite widespread public opposition, the governor of Niigata Prefecture, where the plant is located, had given his consent for the restart next month. Surveys reveal that 60 % of voters are opposed to it. One of the two reactors that has received authorization from the authorities to begin operation is now online, according to Tepco's reported to the Chinese news company Kyodo. Due to a mistake being found in an alarm that did not sound when the reactor's control rods were being tested before being removed, the restart comes a day later.
The most important thing
After the regional nuclear controller gave its approval to commence up two of the building's seven reactors, the Niigata provincial assemblage approved the resume of the plant's fifth reactor in December. Reactor 6 and 7 passed stimulation inspections in 2017, but the company was later ordered to keep operating because of safety issues resulting from terrorist attacks. The Kashiwazaki-Kariwa flower, which has a capacity of over 8, 000 megawatts ( MW), is a crucial part of Tepco's power supply plan and supports the Chinese government's plan to boost nuclear power plants in order to meet its emissions reduction goals. When Japan shut down all of its reactors at Fukushima in March 2011, following the triple disaster, which involved an earthquake, a storm, and a nuclear accident, the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa grow was shut down.
