Palm Beach Airport Already Bears Trump's Name, But Its Code Will Still Be PBI for 40 Days
The transition to the DJT code will be gradual and airlines adjust their systems to avoid confusion
Palm Beach International Airport, in Florida, began a new stage by officially adopting the name President Donald J. Trump International Airport. However, the change will not be immediate for travelers: for the next 40 days it will continue to use the PBI code in tickets and reservation systems, while authorities complete the transition to the new DJT identifier.
According to CBS News, the name change came into effect on July 9, after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed the law in March that renamed the air terminal in honor of President Donald Trump.
Although the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has already begun to implement the new name in its operational records, the DJT airport code will not be used by airlines and passengers until next August 18, when the International Air Transport Association (IATA) completes the update of its systems.
Why will you still see the PBI code?
During this transition period, two identifiers for the same airport will coexist. While pilots, air traffic controllers and some operations will use the DJT code, passengers will continue to find PBI in their reservations, boarding passes and flight inquiries.
Airline industry analyst Henry Harteveldt of Atmosphere Research Group explained that airlines made adjustments to avoid errors.
“People searching for flights with the PBI code will be automatically redirected to the airport that will now be named after Donald J. Trump,” said the specialist, quoted by the aforementioned media.
In addition, he indicated that crews will have the flexibility to simply announce their arrival in West Palm Beach, without the need to mention the new name of the airport during this first stage.
An unusual change in aviation
Modifying the three-letter code of an airport is an exceptional measure. IATA notes that these identifiers are usually maintained permanently and only change when there is a compelling justification, generally related to operational safety.
In this case, the request was submitted by the main airlines that operate in the terminal, including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, JetBlue and Southwest Airlines, in order to harmonize the new name of the airport with its official code.
Meanwhile, airport authorities recommended travelers continue using PBI until August 18, the date on which the change will be final in all reservation and air operation systems.
The airport receives about 8 million passengers each year and is one of the most used by President Donald Trump, due to its proximity to his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach.
