The Los Angeles Fire Department ( LAFD ) received an Excellence Award star on Friday in recognition of their bravery and public service in the January wildfires.

The difference was made when a Connecticut student in eighth grade submitted a proposal to the leader of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce as part of a class assignment. The star's opening ceremony, which took place outside the Ovation Entertainment Complex on Hollywood Boulevard, was attended by Connecticut scholar Eniola Taiwo.
