The United Kingdom government has issued a travel alert for British citizens planning to attend the round of 16 match between England and Mexico, scheduled for July 5 at the Mexico City Stadium, as part of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The update to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) travel guide includes special recommendations for those traveling to the country during the tournament and warns of an increase in reports of cell phone theft, cases of adulterated drinks and other incidents related to large gatherings of people.

In addition, the British Foreign Ministry refers to the four deaths recorded during the celebrations for the classification of the Mexican National Team to the round of 16, which occurred in the vicinity of the Angel of Independence, as an example of the risks associated with mass events.

Among the recommendations issued to fans are to keep an eye on their belongings, avoid accepting drinks from unknown people, only use official channels to purchase tickets, reserve accommodation in advance and allow additional times for transfers due to security operations and the high influx of visitors.

The guide also reminds that British citizens do not require a visa to enter Mexico as tourists, although immigration authorities may request proof of accommodation, an exit ticket and evidence of financial solvency.

Likewise, it is recommended to always carry your original passport and keep it valid throughout your stay.

The FCDO further reiterated its continuing warnings against non-essential travel to various regions of the country due to issues related to crime and violence.

Among the designated entities are parts of Baja California, Tamaulipas, Zacatecas, Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Jalisco, Guanajuato and Chiapas, although in some cases there are exceptions for tourist destinations and specific corridors.

The alert does not constitute a ban on travel to Mexico, but rather an update of the preventive measures that the British government usually issues for its citizens when large international events take place, such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
