Four children and their grandmother died in Toledo, Ohio, in a suspected case of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning while they remained inside a disabled car waiting for help to change a tire.

The victims were identified as twins Liberty and Legacy, 4 years old; Storm, 3; Stone, 2; and his grandmother, Candace McAllister, 36, reported WTVG News.

According to authorities, the vehicle was stopped in the 300 block of Phillips Avenue, near Detroit Avenue, when it began to fill with carbon monoxide while the windows were closed and the air conditioning was on.

The father found the family unconscious

The investigation indicates that McAllister called the children's father, Kesaun Coleman, for help after suffering a flat tire.

When the man arrived at the scene, he found the five occupants unconscious inside the car and immediately called the emergency service.

Teams from the Toledo Police, firefighters and personnel specialized in hazardous materials responded to the scene and began resuscitation maneuvers.

However, efforts failed to save four of the victims.

Legacy, known to his family as “Ace,” remained alive for nearly two days on life support, but finally passed away on Friday.

Monoxide levels exceeded five times the lethal limit

Toledo Fire Department Chief Allison Armstrong explained that initially emergency crews did not know what had happened and activated a protocol for hazardous materials incidents.

Investigators later determined that the most likely cause was accidental carbon monoxide poisoning.

According to the children's mother, Adriana Coleman, a detective informed her that the gas levels inside the car reached five times the limit considered lethal.

“I just love my babies.”

Visibly affected, Adriana Coleman assured that it is still impossible for her to assimilate the loss of her children.

“It seems unreal because my life stopped at this moment,” he declared.

He also expressed that he does not know how his life will continue after leaving the hospital.

“I just love my babies,” she said through tears.

The mother remembered each of her children for their personality.

He described Liberty as a girl who always wanted to take care of everyone; Storm as a little girl who admired her older sister, although she had her own personality; Legacy, nicknamed “Ace,” as the most restless of the family; and Stone as “her last baby.”

Regarding Candace McAllister, he stated that she was a cheerful woman and the soul of any family gathering.

Authorities rule out signs of a crime

The mayor of Toledo, Wade Kapszukiewicz, regretted what happened and pointed out that no family should go through a tragedy of that magnitude.

Although the authorities indicated that at the moment there are no indications of a criminal act, the investigation will continue to determine precisely how the accumulation of gas occurred inside the vehicle.

The Toledo Police reiterated that the case remains under investigation and expressed their condolences to the family members.

After the tragedy, relatives reported that they did not have life insurance to cover funeral expenses.

For this reason, they began a financial support campaign through the Coleman-McAllister Fund, set up at a local bank branch.

In a message published on social networks, Adriana Coleman recalled that being a mother was the most important aspect of her life.

"There was nothing I enjoyed, loved or fought for more than being a mom. I loved my children more than anything else in this world," she wrote.
