Hearing impairment is one of the leading causes of disability globally, affecting young people, middle-aged adults and the elderly. Recent research indicates that by adopting healthy lifestyle habits, the risk of developing this condition can be significantly reduced.
A group of researchers from Fudan University conducted a comprehensive analysis that included 441,844 participants between the ages of 40 and 69. The study identified the relationship between lifestyle and the risk of hearing impairment over an average follow-up of 14 years, reported News Medical Life Sciences.
The researchers assessed seven health-related behaviors: smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, sleep, sedentary time, social participation and supplement use. 20,743 new cases of hearing impairment were identified, concluding that an optimal lifestyle reduces the risk by 14%.
Influential factors in hearing health
Among the habits analyzed, quitting smoking showed the greatest positive impact, while reducing sedentary time also contributed to improved hearing health. The results indicated that metabolic dysfunction is crucial in the connection between lifestyle and ear health.
The findings suggest that hearing conservation strategies should include metabolic health management. Promoting lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking and reducing a sedentary lifestyle, could be essential to reduce the long-term risk of hearing impairment.
Early signs of hearing impairment
Early signs of hearing impairment can be subtle. Recognizing them early allows you to request an evaluation and begin support as soon as possible.

When to act
A single sign does not confirm a hearing impairment, but if it recurs, it is advisable to consult an otolaryngologist or audiologist and request a hearing test. In children, it is not advisable to wait for it to “go away,” because early detection and intervention favor language development.
Hearing loss that appears suddenly, especially in one ear, or is accompanied by severe dizziness, pain, discharge, or facial weakness, requires urgent medical attention.
