Although some popular beliefs attribute special meanings to this time, even unpleasant or terrifying, due to the opposite time to which Jesus Christ died, experts clarify that waking up at exactly 3:00 am has to do with natural sleep cycles.

But the accumulated stress and functional changes in the body are also added. During the night, the body goes through several stages of rest that repeat approximately every 90 to 100 minutes.

Julia Kogan, doctor of psychology, health psychologist and specialist in stress and insomnia, cited by the Very Well Mind portal, states that it is common for people to wake up briefly when they go from one sleep cycle to another.

Why does it happen right at 3:00 am?

In the second half of the night, sleep is usually lighter, so the possibility of noticing small awakenings increases. For many people, waking up around 3:00 am occurs after they have completed several rest cycles and is not a problem if they can easily return to sleep.

“As long as the person can fall back asleep relatively easily, this is not considered a problem,” Kogan says. But when it is very frequent and causes insomnia, it is time to act.

That is where the so-called conditioned insomnia arises. Annie Miller, therapist and owner of DC Metro Therapy, explains that the brain can learn to wake up at a certain time after periods of stress, anxiety, or constant sleep interruptions.

Even when the initial cause disappears, the body can maintain that pattern and repeat the awakening night after night.

The natural increase in cortisol during the early morning hours can also promote these awakenings. Nilou Esmaeilpour, clinical director and founder of Lotus Therapy, points out that this increase is part of the normal circadian rhythm, but can be felt more intensely when a person is experiencing high levels of stress.

“Most people need between seven and nine hours of sleep, but if someone tries to sleep or stays in bed longer than necessary, their body will wake up and stay awake because it doesn't need as much sleep,” Kogan adds.

Diet can also influence. Large dinners, excess fluids before bed or changes in blood sugar levels can cause interruptions at night. Alcohol consumption can also alter the quality of rest.

When should it be a cause for concern?

Waking up occasionally at 3:00 am is usually normal. However, if it occurs every night for weeks, affects daytime performance, or is accompanied by extreme tiredness, intense anxiety, or difficulty returning to sleep, it may be advisable to consult a professional.

Additionally, some medical conditions may be related to these awakenings. Miller explains that during perimenopause hormonal changes can cause hot flashes and night sweats. Kogan also mentions that respiratory disorders, pain, cardiovascular problems and some medications can affect sleep.

Maintaining regular schedules, reducing stress, taking care of nighttime eating, and creating a rest routine can help reduce these episodes.
