A federal court temporarily stopped the use of the new electoral map promoted by Alabama, considering that it intentionally discriminates against African-American voters.

A three-judge panel determined that the map approved by the Republican legislature in 2023 violates the 14th Amendment to the Constitution because it is based on discriminatory racial criteria, The New York Times reported.

Instead of the map promoted by Republican legislators, the judges ordered to continue using the electoral plan previously selected by the court itself, which includes two congressional districts with an African-American majority and was already used during the 2024 elections.

“Ultimately, we see no clear way to require Alabamians to cast their votes in the 2026 election under a congressional districting plan flawed by intentional discrimination based on race,” the justices said.
