The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, reported this Monday that she is preparing to send more humanitarian aid to care for the population affected by the earthquakes last week in Venezuela, whose death toll now amounts to 1,450 deaths and thousands of injuries, following the request made by the Government of the president in charge, Delcy Rodríguez.

During her daily press conference, the president explained that yesterday the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) received a letter asking for more support after last week's earthquakes.

"Yesterday, a statement arrived at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs asking for more support. It is a letter they sent to Mexico and other countries. They ask for water purification plants, energy plants. And now they are also asking for some food of non-perishable products," he noted.

The earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 recorded on Wednesday of last week have so far left 1,450 dead and at least 3,150 injured, a devastation that will foreseeably force Venezuela to mobilize enormous resources for reconstruction, for which foreign aid will be essential.

The Mexican president indicated that the rescue brigades sent by Mexico continue to work in Venezuelan territory and have already participated in rescue work.

"The Secretary General (of National Defense) informed us that two people were rescued by the Mexican brigade. There are 250 elements that will remain there," he stated.

However, he stressed that if necessary "more rescuers will be sent" since Mexico is specialized in this type of procedures.

Likewise, he explained that the federal government coordinates with the entities that have set up collection centers to concentrate and distribute supplies.

“We are reaching an agreement with the different entities that opened the collection centers to be able to bring them to one place,” he indicated.

The aid, he said, will be transported by air and sea.

Regarding the call he had with the Venezuelan president in charge, Delcy Rodríguez, to express Mexico's support in the face of the tragedy, he said: "We spoke in general about the situation in Venezuela, which is very sad because of what they are experiencing. Always in our solidarity, that was what I expressed to her." EFE
