Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated this Sunday that the US also needs to work to reduce drug consumption and reach out to its youth to reduce drug addiction, in addition to boasting about a 50% decrease in fentanyl that crosses between both countries.

“They (the United States) also have to work to reduce consumption, they have to reach out to their youth so that there isn't so much drug addiction. It's a comprehensive effort to address the root causes and also to reduce impunity,” the president emphasized during his visit to the western state of Michoacan, one of the most dangerous in Mexico.

She also argued that thanks to the joint work between her government's security strategy and US collaboration, “the amount of fentanyl that crosses from Mexico to the United States has been cut in half.”

In the context of these statements, Sheinbaum reiterated that they collaborate with their northern neighbor, but stressed that "there is something that is not negotiable, and that is the sovereignty and independence of the nation." Come after his US counterpart, Donald Trump, asserted that he will “begin attacking on the ground” the Mexican cartels that, he maintained, “are running Mexico.” entail.

The members of the House of Representatives considered that the military action would “undermine” the “decades” of efforts that the United States has made in Mexico against drug supply chains.such as programs to strengthen the rule of law and combat corruption.

They also highlighted that Sheinbaum, who took office in October 2024, “has strengthened intelligence to combat organized crime, significantly reduced homicide rates, and overseen the largest fentanyl seizure in Mexico's history.”

During her tour of Michoacan, one of the states that is home to at least twelve drug cartels—including the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel, designated by the US as a terrorist organization—Sheinbaum emphasized the implementation of the Plan for Peace and Justice in the state.

“We are aware of the security problems in the state,” she stressed, mentioning that to resolve insecurity in Michoacan, the root causes must be addressed, primarily ensuring that “no young person gets involved with a criminal group,” which, she said, is “a choice between prison or death.” EFE
