After the 7. 4 magnitude earthquake that erupted in much of Colombia and left people injured and seriously wounded, notably in the Chocó office, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced this Monday that her government was supporting the country's neighbor.

“Of course, all the support that the people of Colombia require, if necessary, we will be there,” said the president during her morning press conference.

The Mexican leader assured that her administration remains aware of the evolution of the emergency.

"We found out a moment ago about the serious earthquake in Colombia. We still don't have more information, but we are very attentive both with our embassy there and with the ambassador here," he declared.

The earthquake occurred at 07:34 local time (12:34 GMT) and had its epicenter in the town of San José del Palmar, in the department of Chocó, on the Colombian Pacific coast, according to the first reports from the Colombian Geological Service (SGC).

The earthquake was felt in large areas of Colombia and caused damage especially in Quibdó, capital of Chocó, where authorities reported injured people and collapsed buildings or structural damage.

"We have just experienced a serious seismic event in the department of Chocó. Although the epicenter was San José del Palmar, in the capital Quibdó there are injuries and serious damage to buildings," reported the governor of the department, Nubia Carolina Córdoba, on the social network X.

The official pointed out that the authorities are carrying out an assessment of the damage to issue a first official assessment of the emergency.

Images spread on social networks show buildings totally or partially collapsed in different sectors of Quibdó, while several citizens took to the streets after the strong movement.

Damage has also been reported in cities in the west and center of the country such as Cali, Manizales, Pereira and Medellín, while emergency agencies continue to collect information on the magnitude of the damage.

Chocó, one of the regions with the highest poverty rates in Colombia and with significant infrastructure deficiencies, is currently focusing the attention of the authorities due to the magnitude of the damage caused by the earthquake. EFE
