Apple unveiled an impressive suite of child safety features at WWDC 2026 that will transform how parents manage their children's digital experience. These tools will arrive this fall with iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27, and are designed to be simple, intuitive and based on recommendations from experts in child development and digital security. The most interesting thing is that Apple does not impose a single solution, but rather offers parents the flexibility to adapt each protection according to the age and specific needs of their child.

Initial setup with Child Account and application selection

The mandatory starting point is to create a Child Account on the child's device. This account activates automatic system-wide protections such as restricting adult websites, limiting age-appropriate media, and age-based restrictions on the App Store. Apple guides parents through the creation process when setting up a new device for their child. The Child Account is required for children under 13 years of age and available up to age 18.

Once the account is created, parents can decide exactly which apps they will have access to from the start. You have three options: start with just a few essential apps, select a curated set recommended by Apple, or manually choose the apps you deem appropriate. Parents can add more apps gradually over time while maintaining control at every step. This approach allows children to explore technology safely without feeling unduly restricted.

The existing Ask to Buy feature requires parental approval before downloading any app from the App Store, free or paid, and before making in-app purchases. The new Ask to Browse feature extends this familiar approval system beyond apps to websites. Kids will need to ask permission when they want to visit a new website in Safari. Parents can review the request before authorizing it. This feature is enabled by default for ages 13 and under and works on Safari, other supported browsers, and iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices.

Communications protection and detection of violent content

From the start, Apple allows parents to manage who can connect with their children in Messages, FaceTime and Phone. When children are looking to communicate with new contacts, parents can require that their children request permission before adding any new people. The idea is that access to new people will gradually expand, in the same way that happens with applications and websites. This creates an environment where children learn to build digital relationships progressively and safely.

The Communication Safety feature already blurs nudity when detected in Messages and FaceTime calls and is turned on by default for users under 18 years of age. This year it is expanded to intervene before children can view or share violent content or sensitive images. The feature will now automatically block gore or violent content when detected in shared images or videos. In addition to protecting, children will have the option to send a message to someone they trust to ask for help if they wish when they encounter inappropriate content.

Time management with Time Limits and personalized schedule

Apple completely revamped its strategy for managing device usage time with two main tools. Time Limits offer daily recommendations for categories such as entertainment, video games and social networks. When parents set these limits, they receive guidelines based on expert research tailored to the child's specific age. This serves as a useful starting point that parents can easily adjust based on what they determine is best for their child.

Families will also be able to create custom schedules to determine which apps will be available at different times of the day and throughout the week. This allows, for example, restricting access to entertainment during school hours and offering greater flexibility on weekends. The feature helps parents ensure their children can stay focused when it's important, such as during classes.

The Screen Time tool has been completely redesigned and now more clearly shows average device usage, most used apps, and key controls for quick adjustments. Parents can make adjustments to their children's app and web access on the fly, with just a tap. For example, to protect important family moments, parents can quickly limit access during meals, outdoor play, and other times that require full attention. If kids need a little extra time to finish something in an app, parents can easily extend access too.

Apple will also launch a dedicated parenting website with the latest tools, helpful resources, and answers to common questions about getting started. The company continues to work with the American Academy of Pediatrics to adapt its Family Media Plan into a guide that parents can consult when using Apple products.
