A police helicopter crashed Wednesday night at the scene of a shootout in Arizona, killing the two people on board, authorities said.

Flagstaff police said the Arizona Department of Public Safety Ranger helicopter (AZDPS) was providing tactical air support to its officers and other law enforcement agencies when it crashed, killing the pilot and the officer/paramedic on board.

At the time, law enforcement officers “were involved in a shootout with a suspect,” who suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and was taken into custody, Flagstaff police said, adding that no one else was injured.

The AZDPS Serious Incident Division will lead the investigation into the shooting and will assist the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board in the crash investigation, Flagstaff police said.

Amanda Brewer, an area resident, told CBS Phoenix affiliate. KPHO-TV that she heard three gunshots followed by two more around 8:40 pm local time, so she called 911. She added that officers arrived within minutes.

Brewer said she then heard between 15 and 20 shots were fired. Then he heard the helicopter over his house shortly after 10 pm, followed by more gunfire. “You could hear the rotors running,” he said. "Then there was a really loud crash that shook the house. It was alarming." Brewer said there was a fairly large fire burning in the woods behind his house and that he heard more gunfire after the crash. Flagstaff police ordered residents of a neighborhood to shelter in place around 10:15 pm in a social media post.
