Bayer proposes to resolve Roundup herbicide case with a $7.2 billion settlement
Although the pharmaceutical company agreed to pay the compensation, the agreement does not include an admission of liability or brand irregularities
The largest German foreign pharmaceutical company in the world announced in a statement on Tuesday that it plans to settle the Roundup herbicide case involving its chemical company Monsanto for$ 7. 2 billion.
Since Bayer acquired Monsanto in the year since 2018, it has been the subject of thousands of lawsuits involving Roundup, in which consumers claim the pesticide has caused non-Hodgkin cancer cases. Although the medical company acknowledged the arrangement in its assertion, it does not include a statement of liability or any crime on its part. However, if the arrangement is approved by the court, Monsanto may be required to pay the victims annually for at least 21 years. Additionally, people who have been diagnosed with this type of cancer and exposed to the pesticides before this most recent ruling will be able to record their compensation claims. For its part, Bayer would assume between 7. 8 and 11. 8 billion euros in litigation liabilities, which would amount to between$ 9. 2 and$ 13. 9 billion. Although this is not the first time Bayer has settled a lawsuit for Monsanto products with a sizable sum of money, it points out that Roundup is also available for purchase both online and in physical stores because, according to the medical company, the pesticide is healthy and its ingredients are tested before being approved.
