The last eight American passengers who remained in the National Quarantine Unit in Nebraska completed their 42-day isolation period. This protocol was implemented following a hantavirus outbreak on the cruise ship MV Hondius, which resulted in the deaths of three people.

Let us remember that more than 120 passengers were evacuated from the cruise ship in the Canary Islands, including 18 Americans who were transferred to quarantine. While some left the ship before the outbreak was recorded, the remainder were monitored by health authorities.

“Through close collaboration among federal, state and local partners, HHS helped protect the American people, contain potential risks and bring this response to a successful conclusion,” said Department of Health and Human Services spokeswoman Emily Hilliard in an email reported by the Associated Press (AP).

Quarantine controversy

One of the passengers, Angela Perryman, expressed her displeasure at being detained in quarantine. Although most other passengers were released, she was forced to stay due to public health decisions deemed unnecessary by some officials.

Passengers received care and support during their stay in Omaha. In addition to special meals from local restaurants, the rooms were equipped with hotel-like amenities, making it easy to adapt to the lockdown.

Health authorities are still investigating the possibility of transmission of the Andes virus between humans. With a total of 13 cases identified, the outbreak highlights the importance of a rapid and effective response to public health threats in closed environments.
