Nicolas Maduro and his wife arrived in New York after being captured in Caracas and will face federal charges in the U.S.
The president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, arrived this Saturday in New York, just twelve hours after his capture in Caracas, following a U.S. military operation that has generated global controversy and a deep diplomatic crisis.
The Boeing 757 that transported Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores landed Saturday afternoon at Stewart International Airport, located north of New York City. Dozens of federal agents, including those from the FBI and DEA, boarded the plane to take custody of both of them. According to various reports that emerged at the time, U.S. special forces conducted an operation early Saturday morning in Caracas that culminated in the capture of Maduro and his partner. The raid took place at his residence within the Fuerte Tiuna military complex in the Venezuelan capital, amid explosions and the sound of aircraft in the area. Following their arrest, they were transferred to the aircraft carrier USS Iwo Jima, docked in international waters, and from there flown to US territory to face charges in a federal court in New York. Once in New York, federal authorities plan to transfer Maduro to the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, where he will remain in custody while awaiting his appearance before a federal judge, according to CNN. The exact date of the initial hearing has not yet been confirmed, but it is expected to take place in the coming days. Authorities confirmed that security measures are extremely strict and that the transfer from the airport to the detention center will be coordinated under heavy protection. Maduro was formally indicted in 2020 by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York, and a superseding indictment was unsealed this Saturday in that same court, reiterating charges of narcoterrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine, and crimes related to automatic weapons. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi,He declared that both Maduro and Flores will face “the full force of U.S. justice on U.S. soil and in U.S. courts” for their alleged involvement in an international criminal conspiracy that affected that country.
