The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced the cancellation of a new military political attack against Venezuela, stating that both countries “are collaborating effectively” in the reconstruction of the country's oil and gas infrastructure.

On Friday, in a post on Truth Social, Trump highlighted the release of a large number of prisoners by Venezuela, which he described as “a very important gesture” and smart.”

“Thanks to this cooperation, I have canceled the previously planned second wave of attacks, which appears to be unnecessary. However, all ships will remain in place for security reasons,” Trump stated.

This Thursday, Jorge Rodriguez, president of the Venezuelan National Assembly, announced that the government would release a significant number of foreign and Venezuelan prisoners. Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares later stated that five Spanish prisoners had been released and were on a flight back to their country of origin.

Trump's recent post contrasts with what he stated at a press conference on January 3, where he suggested that a second attack against Venezuela was unlikely to be considered necessary due to the success of the first operation.

“We are ready to launch a second, much larger attack, if necessary,” he told the press at the time. "So we were prepared for a second wave if necessary. In fact, we assumed it would be necessary. But now it probably won't be. The first wave, if you want to call it that, the first attack was so successful that we probably won't have to do a second one, but we are prepared for a second wave, a much larger one.” Washington launched a military operation in Venezuela over the weekend that led to the capture of the country's president, Nicolas Maduro, and his wife, Cilia Flores, both accused of drug trafficking. Trump has focused his attention on Venezuela's rich energy resources, declaring shortly after the operation that he had been in talks with oil giants to rebuild the country's oil infrastructure, CNBC reported. Venezuela, a founding member of the powerful OPEC energy alliance, has 303 billion barrels of crude oil, according to the US Energy Information Administration. This represents about 17% of the world's oil reserves, but it is estimated to currently produce less than 1% of global oil output and exports only half of what it produces. On Tuesday, Trump announced that Venezuelan authorities would deliver up to 50 million barrels of oil to the United States, to be sold at market prices. "That money will be controlled by me, as President of the United States, to ensure that it is used for the benefit of the people of Venezuela and the United States," Trump declared at the time. Sources close to the White House later informed CNBC that Venezuela will send sanctioned oil to the United States indefinitely.
