President Donald Trump said Friday that the United States will take action on Greenland and Venezuela to prevent Russia or China from establishing a foothold in those strategic territories.

During a meeting with oil executives at the White House, Trump stressed that Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, is crucial for security national and that he will not allow foreign powers to occupy the island.

“We will do something about Greenland, whether they like it or not. Because if we don't, Russia or China will take over Greenland, and we won't have Russia or China as neighbors,” the president said.

The president also defended the military operation carried out last Saturday in Venezuela, which resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, on charges of narcoterrorism and drug trafficking. Trump asserted that the action seeks to protect American sovereignty and the security of its citizens.

“We don't want Russia or China in Venezuela,” Donald Trump stated.

Trump seeks to negotiate with Denmark

Trump reiterated that he will seek to negotiate with Denmark, but warned that the United States will act “the easy way or the hard way” if an agreement is not reached. He pointed out that Greenland, in addition to its strategic value, possesses resources such as oil and rare earth elements, and that its control would allow the United States to better protect the Arctic region.

Trump's proposal has generated rejection among European leaders, who defend the sovereignty of Denmark and Greenland and call for NATO cooperation to guarantee Arctic security.

In a joint statement, the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and Denmark affirmed that "Greenland belongs to its people" and that only they can decide on their affairs.

Trump warned that NATO must understand the United States' position.

"We are not going to allow Russia or China to occupy Greenland, and that is what will happen if we don't," he said.underscoring the island's importance as a strategic point between North America and Europe.

Trump stated that Washington will address the situation in the coming months, in parallel with the expansion of investments and oil operations in Venezuela.
