Nintendo could be preparing a Switch 2 Lite: these are the details we know so far
Rumors surrounding the possible presentation of a Lite version of the Nintendo Switch 2 continue to grow among fans of the brand
Rumors of a supposed Nintendo Switch 2 Lite are growing because a very strange clue appeared in an "official" place: the Nintendo account portal showed a new hardware code called "OSM," and that ignited the imagination of half the internet. For now, the only truly solid thing is that the code exists and that Nintendo hasn't explained what it means, so everything else is somewhere between reasonable theory and pure speculation.
The “OSM” Code and Why the Rumor Exploded
It all started with a discovery on the Nintendo Account Portal, where a hardware identifier called OSM was detected. The interesting part: when you look up that code, the portal returns an image associated with Switch 2, but the “known” code for Switch 2 would be BEE, so OSM could point to another model (or simply an internal placeholder).
From there, the classic game of telephone began: the unofficial interpretation that OSM could mean “Ounce Small Model,” that is, a smaller and lighter version (wink wink: Lite), became popular on social media. The key point to avoid hype: several analyzes also warn that this image could be a reused resource or an incomplete element of the portal, so OSM doesn't confirm a product on its own.
What we know about the Switch 2 (and what a “Lite” would change)
To understand why the rumor is gaining traction, it helps to look at the starting point: the Switch 2 (current model) was released on June 5, 2025, with a price of $450 and includes a 7.9-inch LCD screen at 1080p and 120Hz, as well as 256GB of internal storage. It also comes with Joy-Con 2 with magnetic attachment and new features such as mouse-like controls and GameChat (with a free trial period that expires on March 31, 2026).
So, what would a “Lite” entail? Historically, "Lite" at Nintendo usually means cheaper and simpler: more compact hardware, fewer "premium" components, and a focus on portability. In the case of the Switch 2, the most common speculation is that a Lite version would aim to lower the price (or at least make it more affordable).Although there are still no reliable leaks about specific cuts (screen, vibration, dock, integrated controllers, etc.).
Even if Nintendo wanted to release a Lite soon, the context of component costs remains a topic of public discussion, pushing brands to balance price, power, and margins. In other words: a Switch 2 Lite sounds like a logical strategy, but it could also be difficult to pull off if the priority is maintaining good performance and an aggressive price at the same time.
If Nintendo is really preparing a family of models (Lite, OLED, “Pro”, whatever), it would make business sense: a more affordable version expands the installed base, and that boosts game and subscription sales. But today, with what's on the table, “OSM” is an interesting clue, not a console ready for pre-order.
