Brown is left without suspects after release of the only person detained in the shooting that left two students dead
Rhode Island authorities release the only person of interest detained in the Brown University shooting
Authorities confirmed Sunday night the release of the only person of interest detained after the shooting at Brown University, which left two students dead and at least nine wounded.
The decision was announced during an emergency press conference, in which investigators acknowledged that there were insufficient legal grounds to keep the individual in custody. With this measure, the case is once again left without any identified suspects.
“We have a killer out there,” stated Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha, who admitted that the investigation will have to be completely reoriented.
A setback in a key investigation
The detainee had been arrested hours earlier at a Hampton Inn hotel in Coventry, Rhode Island, about 20 miles from Providence. Although his identity was not officially revealed, sources close to the case indicated that he was a 24-year-old man from Wisconsin.
Neronha explained that there was initial evidence linking the individual to the attack, but that this could not be corroborated after further analysis. “Sometimes you move in one direction and then you have to regroup and change course,” he noted.
The campus, between mourning and uncertainty
The shooting occurred Saturday afternoon inside a classroom in the engineering building, during a final exam review session. The attacker fired more than 40 rounds with a 9mm pistol before fleeing.
The fatalities were identified as Ella Cook, a sophomore and vice president of the university republican club, and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, a scholarship student of Uzbek origin who aspired to become a neurosurgeon.
Brown canceled the remainder of the semester's academic activities and allowed students to leave the campus, while a reinforced police presence remains.
Injuries and Medical Care
Of the nine people injured, one has been released, while seven remain in critical but stable condition, and one continues in critical condition. Among the injured is Kendall Turner,a recent high school graduate from North Carolina.
University President Christina Paxson was visibly moved as she recounted her visits to hospitalized students.
“They are incredible and they support each other,” she said.
Community demands answers
Although authorities have not ordered a new lockdown, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley acknowledged that the release of the detainee will generate more anxiety in the community.
While the investigation continues, authorities asked the public to collaborate by providing surveillance videos or other information that could help identify the person responsible for the attack.
Brown, one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the United States, now faces one of the most violent episodes in its recent history, amid mourning, uncertainty, and demands for justice.
