A Lancaster County man faces more than 500 charges after investigators discovered more than 100 human bone fragments in his home.

Police say the arrest of Jonathan Gerlach, 34 Years later, a month-long investigation into thefts at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Yeadon culminated, where at least 26 mausoleums and vaults had been broken into since the beginning of November. Police were investigating the series of thefts when an investigator checked Gerlach's vehicle license plates and discovered that he had been near Yeadon repeatedly during the period in which the thefts occurred. Police say the thefts targeted sealed vaults and mausoleums containing ancient burials, which had been forced open or had damaged stonework to access the remains inside. He was arrested as he walked back from the cemetery to his car with a crowbar and a bag containing the mummified remains of two young children, three skulls, and other bones, according to a statement. Gerlach told investigators he took about 30 sets of human remains and showed them the graves from which he stole them. Investigators said the arrest led to a search of Gerlach's home in Ephrata, Lancaster County, where they found more than 100 bone fragments. "The other night, detectives came across a horror movie come to life. It's an unbelievable scene," said Tanner Rouse, Delaware County District Attorney. "Some are 200 years old. Others are obviously much more recent; there's one with a pacemaker still connected to the body." “I feel very sorry for those who are distraught by this, for those who are having a hard time, for those who are trying to figure out if it's their loved one or their child, because we found remains that we believe belong to infants just months old, among whom he had collected,” Rouse added. Police believe the remains were also stolen from other cemeteries in the region. Furthermore,They are investigating a Facebook group called “Human Bones and Skulls for Sale Group,” where Gerlach was tagged and photographed holding a skull. “In short, detectives have recovered a large number of bones so far, and we are still trying to determine who they are, where they came from, and how many we are looking for. "It will be quite some time before we have a definitive answer," Rouse stated. Authorities said they still do not know if any remains were sold or why Gerlach wanted them.
