Political and social pressure to cancel the cooperation agreement between the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) and the Miami Police increased this Thursday, after migrant advocacy organizations, community leaders and local officials demanded an end to the federal program known as 287(g), considering that it has deteriorated trust in the authorities and turned the city into one of the main centers of immigration detentions in the country.

The mobilization occurred during a session of the Miami City Council, where dozens of activists supported the initiative presented by Commissioner Christine King, who requested to open the debate to revoke the agreement signed a year ago between the city and ICE.

According to specialists, the agreement authorizes Miami Police officers, after receiving federal training, to perform certain immigration law enforcement functions under ICE supervision, including the detention of people susceptible to deportation.

Given the context, the organizations affirm that Miami leads immigration arrests nationwide. The data released indicates that the ICE regional office based in Miami recorded 41,310 immigration arrests between January 2025 and the first four months of 2026, a figure higher than those reported by other regional offices such as Dallas, New Orleans, Houston, Atlanta, Chicago and San Antonio.

Civil organizations maintain that the collaboration between the municipal police and ICE is generating an effect of distrust among the immigrant population.

Organizations such as the Florida Immigrant Coalition, ACLU Florida, Florida Rising and other groups have sustained permanent campaigns to demand the repeal of the federal program, warning that police cooperation with ICE can discourage the reporting of crimes, increase fear among residents and favor racial profiling practices.
