Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro held a press conference with the Bristol Fire Department and police following an explosion at a nursing home that left two dead and 20 injured. The explosion collapsed part of the building and caused a large fire. The incident occurred on December 23 at approximately 2:15 p.m. (local time) at the Bristol Health and Rehab Center, also known as Silver Lake Nursing Home, in the 900 block of Tower Road in Bristol Township. Emergency crews responded immediately after receiving a report of a strong gas odor. "The search has concluded," authorities reported during a press conference, adding that the explosion happened just as emergency crews were attempting to rescue everyone from the nursing home. Police reported that all employees and residents were located. “The search has concluded and an investigation is underway,” they stated during the press conference. City Fire Chief Kevin Dippolito described the rescue operation in which firefighters found people trapped in stairwells and elevator shafts and pulled residents from the burning building through windows and doors, The Associated Press reported. Gas and electricity were shut off. The local gas company, PECO, shut off natural gas and electricity to the facility to ensure the safety of emergency personnel and local residents. Bristol Health & Rehab Center posted a message on Facebook saying, “We are working closely with local authorities, and our primary focus remains on the well-being of residents, staff, and their families.” Governor Josh Shapiro stated, “Tonight we witnessed true heroism in the county of Bucks.”

“Firefighters rushed into danger to extinguish the blaze and rescue people from the burning building,“They were climbing stairs to pull people from the fire and place them in the arms of police officers who then literally carried them on their backs to safety,” he said.
