A federal court has blocked the Trump administration from creating a database with private information on millions of Americans, including Social Security numbers and citizenship status.

“The federal government has deliberately trampled on American citizens’ right to privacy in a way that threatens the sacred right to vote,” wrote Washington, D.C. District Judge Sparkle Sooknanan. “This court cannot stand by while this happens.”

The lawsuit was filed by the League of Women Voters and other advocacy groups, who welcomed the judge's decision.

“Today's decision is a resounding victory for voters,” said Marcia Johnson, chief activation and justice officer for the League of Women Voters. “Attempts to create a federal voter database to facilitate the purification of the electoral roll threaten the fundamental right that forms the basis of our democracy.”

Judge Sooknanan indicated that the new database promoted by the Trump administration combines citizenship data with information from the Social Security Administration to create a centralized system that Congress has expressly prohibited.
