Russia rules out holding a peace meeting with Ukraine in Miami, Florida
Moscow sources deny that a three-way meeting is being prepared with US mediation
The Kremlin denied on Sunday that a trilateral meeting with Kyiv and Washington was being prepared, at a time when talks are taking place in Miami on how to end the conflict in Ukraine. “At the moment, no one has seriously discussed this initiative, and as far as I know, it is not being prepared,” Russian presidential advisor Yuri Ushakov told reporters, as quoted by the TASS news agency. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on Saturday that Washington proposed organizing a trilateral meeting and quoted Rustem Umerov, one of the Kyiv negotiators who traveled to Miami on Friday. Today he called for broader consultations with European partners. “We are moving at a fairly rapid pace, and our team in Florida has been working with the US side,” Zelensky said on Telegram, without mentioning any possible meeting with Russia.
Round of meetings in Florida
Florida hosted another round of negotiations this weekend, with the presence of Steve Witkoff, US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, his son-in-law Jared Kushner, and Ukrainian and European envoys on one side, and Russian envoys on the other. Kirill Dmitriev, Moscow's envoy, arrived in Miami on Saturday and stated that "discussions are proceeding constructively" with Witkoff and Kushner, according to Russian news agencies. Talks continued on Sunday, and Ushakov told reporters that he "did not see" the new US proposal to end the conflict, drafted after a meeting between Washington and the Ukrainian and European envoys. Dmitriev "will return to Moscow, present his report, and we will discuss what to do next," the Kremlin advisor said. A roundtable bringing together all parties would be the first in six months, but the Ukrainian president expressed skepticism about its potential outcomes. "I'm not sure anything new will come of it," he told reporters on Saturday. Previous meetings, held this summer in Turkey, barely resulted in any agreement on prisoner exchanges.
