Schumer presses Senate for legal action against Trump administration over incomplete Epstein files

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) introduced a resolution Monday directing the Senate to initiate legal action against President Donald Trump's administration for illegally refusing to release the complete Jeffrey Epstein case files.

Excessive censorship of the released files is also noted, as hundreds of Pages were sealed.

“Instead of transparency, the Trump administration released a small fraction of the files and concealed much of what little it did provide,” Schumer said. “This is a blatant cover-up. Pam Bondi and Todd Blanche are protecting Donald Trump from accountability, and the Senate has a duty to act.”

Bondo is the U.S. Attorney General and, as head of the Department of Justice, is primarily responsible for the Epstein case files.

Todd Blanche, who was President Trump’s personal lawyer and is a Deputy Attorney General, has even attempted to justify the removal of 15 photographs of President Trump and his wife Melania Trump from the documents released last Friday.

In a statement, Senator Schumer acknowledged that the resolution could find a clearer path in January, when the Senate reconvenes, defending the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which was unanimously passed by both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

“The law passed by Congress is crystal clear: release the Epstein files in their entirety so that Americans can see the truth,” he declared. Schumer. “Instead, the Trump Justice Department redacted the documents and suppressed the evidence, which violates the law. Today I am introducing a resolution to compel the Senate to take legal action and force this administration to comply.” The senator noted that in total, just over 4,000 records were released,a figure considered lower than the hundreds of thousands of documents the administration claimed it would provide on Friday, December 19.

“Furthermore, about 20% of these documents contained extensive or complete redactions,” Schumer criticized.

Blanche stated on Sunday on NBC News that the Justice Department’s decision to remove 15 photographs on Saturday “has nothing to do with President Trump” and argued that they were removed at the request of victims’ rights groups because they included unedited images.

“When victims’ rights groups inform us about this type of photograph, we remove it and investigate. We are still investigating that photo. It will be republished, and the only question is whether it will be edited,” Blanche justified.

Khanna and Massie accuse of contempt

Democratic Representatives Ro Khanna (California) and Thomas Massie (Kentucky) accused the Justice Department of contempt for failing to comply with the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which they both championed.

In a joint interview on CBS News' "Face the Nation," the lawmakers agreed that prosecutor Bondi would be in contempt of a congressional order.

"The quickest, and I believe the most expeditious, way to get justice for these victims is to hold Pam Bondi in inherent contempt," Massie said.

The Republican said he and Khanna are working on a resolution to hold Bondi in contempt.

Khanna indicated that, if the resolution passes, Bondi would be fined for each day she fails to release all the case files.

"Pam Bondi is breaking the law," Khanna declared. “And this is the corrupt system, the kind of Epstein-type people that people are fed up with. So, I think we’re going to get bipartisan support to hold him accountable, and a congressional committee should determine whether these censures are justified or not.” The resolution would be similar to the one introduced by Senator Schumer, although it is unclear whether they will work on it together. Last Friday, the Justice Department released hundreds of documents, audio recordings, videos, and photographs related to the Epstein case, most of which were already public, but stated that it would soon release more information without offering a specific date.“It has nothing to do with President Trump,” and argued that they were removed at the request of victims' rights groups because they included unedited images.
