Sheinbaum rejects Trump leading offensive against Mexico
Sheinbaum maintained that, despite the differences that have arisen in recent weeks, communication with the US remains active.
The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, ruled out this Monday that the US president, Donald Trump, is behind an “offensive” against Mexico and attributed the recent bilateral tensions to far-right sectors of both countries that, she affirmed, seek to deteriorate the bilateral relationship.
"There is a lot of dialogue with the United States government. In fact, I confess that I do not believe that it is President Trump who has led this offensive on different issues, I don't think so," the president declared during her morning press conference.
Sheinbaum maintained that, despite the differences that have emerged in recent weeks, communication between both governments remains active at different levels and covers diplomatic, security and defense areas.
“What we want is a good relationship with the United States government and all its areas,” he said.
The president also explained that the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Velasco, maintains permanent contact with officials from the White House and the State Department, while the Mexican security cabinet maintains constant communication with its American counterparts.
Sheinbaum's statements come amid recent frictions arising from security issues, drug trafficking and alleged acts of interference denounced by the Mexican Government.
However, the president insisted that the differences should not be attributed directly to Trump.
"I believe that they are sectors of the extreme right in the United States that want there to be no good relationship, that there be a bad relationship with Mexico. That they do not agree with the government that we lead for ideological reasons mainly and that they do not want there to be a good relationship," he stated.
According to the president, these groups maintain ties with Mexican conservative sectors that also seek to confront her administration.
“Those sectors in Mexico that are linked to right-wing sectors around the world and particularly the United States, are the ones that are linked and seek to ensure that there is not a good relationship between our countries,” he said.
Despite this, Sheinbaum reiterated that his Government will continue to support bilateral cooperation, although defending national sovereignty.
“It may have many differences with the United States government, but what we are looking for are coincidences,” he said.
The president also stressed the importance of maintaining direct dialogue with Trump to resolve disagreements.
"Communicating personally with President Trump is very important. Because in those communications I tell him what I think (...) he tells me what he thinks and I tell him what I think and we have always reached an agreement," he stated.
Bilateral relations have been strained in recent weeks following Washington's accusation of extradition of the governor of Sinaloa and nine other state officials for alleged links to drug trafficking, something that Mexico has rejected because it considers it has no evidence. EFE
