Donald Trump will receive his Salvadoran counterpart, Nayib Bukele, in the Oval Office this Thursday, in a meeting that consolidates the close political relationship between both governments and that occurs just a few days after the Central American president obtained the support of his party to seek a third consecutive term, an open possibility after a controversial constitutional reform in El Salvador.

The White House reported that the meeting is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. in Washington and will have as its main focuses cooperation on immigration matters, border security and the fight against organized crime, two of the priorities shared by the Trump and Bukele administrations.

The visit occurs at a time of special political harmony between both leaders. Since Trump's return to the White House in 2025, Washington has strengthened its ties with conservative governments in Latin America, while El Salvador has become one of its main regional allies on migration and security issues.

The Salvadoran political context adds a relevant component to the meeting. Last weekend, the ruling Nuevas Ideas party officially designated Bukele as its candidate for the 2027 presidential elections, clearing the way for him to seek a third consecutive term.

The relationship between Trump and Bukele has been built around a similar vision on public security and irregular immigration.

The Salvadoran president maintains high approval ratings thanks to the strategy of frontal combat against gangs initiated under the emergency regime decreed in 2022, a policy that drastically reduced homicides and modified the country's security landscape, although it has also been the subject of strong international questions for alleged arbitrary detentions, restrictions on due process and complaints about human rights violations.

In parallel, the Trump administration has turned cooperation with El Salvador into an important piece of its regional strategy to contain migratory flows and combat transnational criminal organizations.
