Goalkeeper Fernando Tapia is back with the Eagles of America
Fernando Tapia is back at Club America after the board acquired 30 percent of his rights that belonged to Tigres UANL
Goalkeeper Fernando Tapia became the seventh player to leave Tigres UANL ahead of the start of the Clausura 2026 tournament, after the Club America board decided to acquire 30 percent of his federative rights of the aforementioned goalkeeper.
In this way, Tapia returns to the team where he developed and made the leap to Queretaro's Gallos Blancos, where his good performances led him to generate interest from several teams until the offer from Tigres arrived. He spent four tournaments there, but without being able to take the starting position from the Argentine Nahuel Guzman.
Once the operation, which had been unofficially discussed for some time, was completed, Tapia only went to Tigres' facilities to say goodbye to his teammates at the feline squad's Training Center and from there returned to Mexico City to report to America.
Tapia arrived at Tigres in 2024 looking for playing time, especially after Nahuel Guzman received an 11-match suspension for his disrespect towards the Monterrey players by using a laser beam to distract the Monterrey goalkeeper.
The goalkeeper, who was playing for Queretaro, was acquired by Tigres, who purchased 30 percent of his transfer rights. Now, America has reacquired these rights to compete for the backup goalkeeper position with Rodolfo Cota, given Luis Malagon's potential World Cup call-up and Malagon's absence from the America squad starting in April. The 24-year-old goalkeeper, born in Villahermosa, Tabasco, only played four matches in two years with Tigres. He hopes to compete for the backup goalkeeper position with Rodolfo Cota and get playing time, as he did with Queretaro, where he appeared in 24 Liga MX matches. Tapia is a player who still needs to be tested regularly, but his ambition has always been to develop in America. However, the arrival of Luis Malagon from Queretaro has changed that. Three and a half years ago, his plans were affected, and he had to seek playing time with Queretaro and then Tigres, but without finding the expected consistency. With Tapia and Dourado, America has only made two additions in the current tournament, with no further arrivals at the Coapa facilities currently planned, after the possibility of Brian Garcia joining from Toluca was discussed, but Ralph Orquin will instead go to Toluca. With Fernando Tapia's departure, Tigres has now lost seven players, including Sebastian Cordova, Javier Aquino, Eduardo Tercero, Eugenio Pizzuto, Leonardo Flores, and Bernardo Parra, who went to Atlante, San Luis, and Queretaro, respectively.
