Researchers from the Dasman Diabetes Institute in Kuwait presented a study that shows that the total elimination of sugar, specifically sucrose, can be detrimental to intestinal health. This study was presented at the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society, ENDO 2026.

The scientists conducted a 16-week experiment with two groups of mice, one on a low-fat diet that included sucrose and another completely sugar-free. Factors such as weight, glucose tolerance and the composition of the intestinal microbiota were measured throughout this period.

The findings indicated that, although the sucrose-depleted mice did not gain weight, they showed deterioration in markers of digestive and metabolic health. Imbalances in the gut microbiota, increased inflammation and signs of insulin resistance, as well as changes related to fatty liver disease, were observed.

Rasheed Ahmad, head of the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at the Dasman Diabetes Institute and lead author of the study, warned in a statement that “completely eliminating sucrose from a low-fat diet may unexpectedly alter intestinal health.” This suggests that sucrose plays an important role in immune balance and digestive health.

Implications for dietary guidelines

Following these results, the researchers propose that future dietary guidelines should avoid outright sugar bans and focus more on overall gut health through a balanced diet.
