President Donald Trump delivered a New Year's address filled with lies and exaggerations about his administration's supposed accomplishments, despite polls showing voter discontent with the country's direction and policies that hurt wallets and families.

Trump resorted to his favorite scapegoat, immigrants, to blame them for all the country's ills.

He again attacked the Somali community in Minnesota, and falsely claimed that during the administration of Democratic President Joe Biden, the United States was "invaded" by 25 million undocumented immigrants from prisons and mental institutions.

Besieged by unfavorable polls and the possibility that Republicans will lose control of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections, Trump is resorting to the same old script that immigrants are to blame for everything.

But this time, his policies, including immigration policies, are affecting the voters who supported him, and that could have consequences in the upcoming elections.

Trump Administration Wants to Denaturalize Up to 200 Citizens Monthly

While Trump demonizes undocumented immigrants, his administration continues to seek mechanisms to delegate legal status for authorized immigrants and is even considering stripping naturalized citizens of their citizenship.

The New York Times reported that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) wants its regional offices to process between 100 and 200 denaturalization cases monthly during fiscal year 2026.

“If the cases move forward, it would represent a massive escalation of denaturalization in the modern era…By comparison, between 2017 and 2025, just over 120 cases have been filed, according to the Department of Justice,” the newspaper reported.

“Under federal law, a person can only be denaturalized if they have committed fraud when applying for citizenship or in other specific circumstances,” he added. In Arizona,Children Appear Alone Before Immigration Judges

In another example of the excesses of Trump's immigration policy, various media outlets reported that the speed of deportation proceedings is causing children to appear alone before immigration judges to challenge their own removal cases.

Jimmy Leyva, director of the children's program at the Florence Project for Immigrant and Refugee Rights in Arizona, stated that "we are seeing cases of unaccompanied children moving quickly through the courts, forcing children as young as three years old or even younger to appear alone before immigration judges."

According to the group, on November 24, in Tucson, Arizona, "25 immigrant children appeared in court to challenge their deportation orders."

Judge Allows Congressional Visits to Detention Centers Without Prior Notice

Meanwhile, District of Columbia Judge Jia Cobb approved a request from 12 lawmakers to visit ICE detention centers without prior notice. In recent months, immigration agents have barred federal lawmakers from entering detention centers to verify the conditions faced by immigrants following constant complaints of unsanitary conditions, mistreatment, and even a lack of timely medical attention. It is estimated that some 25 immigrants have died in detention centers so far this year.

Activist detained by ICE nine months ago will have a bail hearing

La Opinion reported that “a judge ordered a bail hearing for Jeanette Vizguerra, an immigrant rights activist who has been detained in Aurora, Colorado, since last March.”

Vizguerra was arrested on March 17 in a Target parking lot. She gained notoriety during Trump's first term for taking refuge in a church to avoid deportation.

Her lawyer indicated that it could be retaliation, as the agents said "we finally have her" when they arrested her.

Judge Nina Wang indicated that Vizguerra's prolonged detention could be unconstitutional.

The question is whether she will have a fair hearing given the way immigration judges are operating under the Trump administration, La Opinion reported.

International Migrants Day

On International Migrants Day, activists in Los Angeles marched to denounce the violent operations that have resulted in more than 10,000 arrests in that city.

At the same time,La Opinion reported that the pro-immigrant organization America's Voice “convened elected officials and policy experts to conclude a busy year on immigration and discuss the overall impact of this administration's anti-immigrant agenda on children, the economy, communities, and legal immigration, including the threat of stripping more Americans of their citizenship.”

Quote of the Week:

“Today we celebrate all the contributions we make to our home, the United States of America, and we reject the lies and attacks from the White House, which are an absolute caricature of who we are as a people,” said Angelica Salas, executive director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA), prior to the International Migrants Day march.
