A JetBlue Airways flight reported a possible impact with a drone while performing approach maneuvers to land at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York, federal authorities reported.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) indicated that the incident occurred Monday morning when the plane arrived from Las Vegas.

The aircraft landed safely.

Subsequent inspection found no damage to the plane.

According to the FAA and the airline, an inspection of the aircraft was performed after landing and no damage or evidence confirming a collision was found.

JetBlue said it will cooperate with any investigation related to the incident.

According to air control audio records cited in the report, the pilot reported that the object had impacted the upper part of the plane, near the cockpit.

Despite the report, the crew indicated that they did not need additional assistance and continued with the landing.

The FAA confirmed that it opened an investigation.

Hours later, another incident was reported near JFK

Later that day, a helicopter pilot reported a close encounter with a remote-controlled aircraft near the airport.

According to air control communications broadcast in the US media, the pilot described the object as a large radio-controlled plane flying at approximately 500 feet high.

Controllers later issued a warning about the presence of an unauthorized aircraft operating within protected airspace.

The object was described as a red and white aircraft observed near a navigation point used by flights landing at JFK.

Authorities recall restrictions on drones near airports

The FAA indicated that it receives more than one hundred monthly reports related to drone sightings near airports.

The agency recalled that operating drones or remote-controlled aircraft without authorization in airport areas is prohibited and may result in fines, criminal charges and other sanctions.

So far, authorities have not established whether the two incidents near JFK are related.

The investigation remains open.
