Tennessee woman loses leg after brutal pit bull attack inside her home
Amanda Mears, a healthcare worker and single mother, was preparing to take her dogs for a walk when they started fighting and one of them attacked her
A 42-year-old mother had to undergo the amputation of her leg after her pit bull violently attacked her while she was trying to break up a fight between her dogs at her home in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The animal was euthanized days later for safety reasons.
The attack occurred while she was trying to separate her dogs
Amanda Mears, a healthcare worker and single mother, was preparing to take her dogs for a walk on December 10 when one of them, an American Pit Bull-American Staffordshire mix named Dennis, lunged at Ralphie, an American Bully, after escaping from a room.
When she tried to intervene to stop the fight, Dennis grabbed Mears' left leg tightly and refused to let go.
“I stepped between them and that's when Dennis latched onto my leg,” she told the British newspaper The Mirror. “I didn't feel any pain because of the adrenaline, but I had to strangle him with my other leg and arms to make him let go.”
Serious Injuries and Extreme Medical Decision
During the attack, the dog also bit her left hand and fractured a bone in her right arm, injuries that Mears didn't notice at the time due to the chaos and the urgency of protecting herself and her 10-year-old son, whom she yelled to stay in her room.
Once freed, she was rushed to a hospital in Nashville. Her leg was severely mangled and, according to doctors, was practically “hanging by a thread.” Specialists offered her two options: immediate amputation or undergoing at least 12 surgeries over the next two years, with chronic pain and an uncertain prognosis. “I decided to have my leg amputated because I couldn't live with constant pain,” she explained. Amputation and Recovery: Three days after the attack, Mears had her leg amputated below the knee and underwent additional surgeries on both arms. She is currently expected to receive a prosthesis.According to a GoFundMe campaign created to help cover her medical expenses.
Mears spent a week hospitalized before returning home.
Euthanization of the dog for safety
After the incident, the woman made the decision to euthanize Dennis, arguing that she had to protect her son and avoid any further risk.
“Dennis was always the sweetest dog. He had never been aggressive,” she said. "He was my best friend; I raised him from birth. It was a devastating but necessary decision."
Mears lived with four dogs and also used to take in animals abandoned by their owners. The case has generated debate on social media about safety, responsible pet ownership, and intervention in dog fights within the home.
