Trump calls Republican setback on Iran war vote unpatriotic
The House defied the president by supporting a measure that seeks to limit his military power
Donald Trump criticized this Thursday the “unpatriotic” vote in the Lower House in favor of a symbolic measure to limit the president's powers in the war he launched against Iran without the authorization of Congress.
In a publication on his Truth Social network, Trump called the vote held the day before “senseless” “right in the middle of the final negotiations to end the war with the Islamic Republic of Iran” and described the four legislators of his party who joined the Democrats to support the resolution as “bad Republicans.”
"Who would do something so unpatriotic? They know where the negotiations are at. Democrats are driven by 'Anti-Trump Delirium Syndrome'. They would rather see our country fail than grant me another victory, one more of many," he warned.
He added that "as for the four Republicans, that is a very different story: they are opportunists who only want to show off! They should be ashamed," Trump concluded.
Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Tom Barrett of Michigan and Warren Davidson of Ohio were the Republicans who joined Democrats in passing the resolution by a favorable vote of 215-208.
This is the first time that a vote related to the Iran war is approved by congressmen and joins another similar resolution that passed in the Senate at the end of May.
However, this measure must now pass through the filter of the Upper House, controlled by the Republicans, and to come into force it would have to be ratified by Trump himself.
The resolution is based on the War Powers Act of 1973, which requires congressional authorization to maintain prolonged military hostilities.
His Democratic promoters insist that Trump ordered the offensive against Iran without the approval of Congress, while the White House defends that the Republican acted within his constitutional powers.
The war against Iran has already entered its fourth month amid a fragile truce and peace talks that so far have not resulted in an agreement to end the conflict, initiated by the US and Israel, and reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz, blocked by Tehran in retaliation for the attacks.
