Two dead, including a 5-month-old baby, after a boat capsizes near the Statue of Liberty

A motorboat capsized Saturday evening in New York Harbor near Liberty Island, killing a 27-year-old girl and a 5-month-old child, according to authorities.
The New York Police Department ( NYPD ) received a report about an overturned boat in the area of Liberty Island around 10:25 p. m.
Disaster personnel rushed to the scene to find the passengers on board.
According to the New York Fire Department ( FDNY), twelve people were saved from the water and transported with minor injuries to nearby hospitals.
Some of the customers were still receiving medical attention and were still in good health, according to authorities.
The actual circumstances surrounding the sink and the number of people traveling on the boat are still being looked into.
A girl and a girl were discovered in the shallows.
Eventually, NYPD divers discovered a 5-month-old baby and an older woman in the water.
Both were taken from the port and taken to Brookly n's NYU Langone Health Hospital in critical condition.
Despite medical efforts, the two were pronounced dead.
Authorities had not released their identities.
The NYPD deployed several specialized teams to respond to the accident.
The New York Police Department's Maritime Unit, the diving team and the Aviation Unit participated in the operation.
Members of the United States Coast Guard also collaborated.
Crews worked through the night to locate possible survivors and verify that no more people were missing.
The operation took place in the waters near Liberty Island, where the Statue of Liberty is located.
The boat was a 22 foot boat.
A police source cited by Fox News Digital indicated that the vessel involved was a bowrider-type boat approximately 22 feet long.
So far it has not been publicly reported what caused the boat to capsize.
The authorities have also not indicated that there was criminal conduct related to the accident.
No arrests have been made and the investigation remains open.
