White House Correspondents' Dinner rescheduled for July after attack
Trump confirmed his attendance at the gala rescheduled for July 24, after the armed attack that forced the event to be evacuated in April
The White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) confirmed that the traditional Correspondents' Dinner will finally be held on July 24, almost three months after the original edition was suspended due to an alleged attack against the president of the United States, Donald Trump, during the event held on April 25 in Washington.
The president of the organization, Weijia Jiang, explained that the decision to repeat the gala was not automatic. In a message addressed to the members of the association, he stated: “We will not allow an act of violence to have the last word,” while stressing that the measure was adopted after a process of consultation and reflection among the members of the WHCA.
Jiang also highlighted that the new edition will be a smaller meeting and will have “significantly reinforced security measures and new access procedures,” in response to the attack that forced the evacuation of officials, journalists and guests during the April gala.
For his part, Trump confirmed through his Truth Social platform that he will attend the event and accepted the invitation to speak at the dinner. The president maintained that lunatics cannot be "allowed to alter" the American way of life and praised the organizers' decision to keep the tradition alive despite the attack.
The new headquarters will be the Waldorf Astoria Washington DC hotel, a property that previously operated under the ownership of the Trump family. The change involves temporarily abandoning the historic Washington Hilton, where the dinner had been held for decades. Founded more than a century ago, the White House Correspondents' Dinner is considered one of the most iconic events in American journalism. In addition to bringing together journalists, officials and political leaders, the gala raises funds for journalism scholarships and promotes the defense of the First Amendment of the Constitution, which protects freedom of the press.
