A 6-year-old boy died after spending several days hospitalized after a huge log of wood fell on him while he was playing on a beach in Washington state, authorities reported.

The victim was identified as Killian Gonzales, who on July 8 was at Little Squalicum Beach, in Bellingham, along with his babysitter and his 10-year-old sister when the accident occurred.

According to the investigation, the minor was playing around a teepee-shaped structure built with large logs dragged by the sea when one of them unexpectedly moved and fell on him, reported Daily Mail.

Emergency crews managed to revive him.

After the accident, the beach became an emergency scene while people who were at the scene tried to free the child.

Paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) maneuvers for approximately 20 minutes until his pulse was restored.

He was later transferred to St. Joseph Medical Center and then to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where trauma specialists continued his treatment.

He suffered serious injuries and several surgeries

Doctors determined that Killian had multiple skull fractures, a broken nose, and a collapsed lung.

Family and friends noted that the neurosurgeon reported that the boy had suffered several strokes and had areas of brain tissue without activity.

As part of the treatment, specialists performed emergency surgery in which they removed a part of the skull to relieve brain swelling.

Despite remaining in critical condition for several days and undergoing multiple medical procedures, the minor died on Sunday.

Authorities rule out a criminal act

Investigators from the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office and the Bellingham Police Department concluded there was no evidence of foul play.

Authorities determined that the child's death was the result of an accident.

Little Squalicum Beach is known for the large number of wooden logs accumulated on the shoreline, many of which are used by visitors to build shelters and makeshift structures.

Killian had just finished kindergarten at Alderwood Elementary School and was looking forward to enjoying his vacation before starting first grade.

His mother, Sonja McCartney, remembered her son as an adventurous, curious and loving child.

“He had an infectious laugh that made everyone around him smile,” he said.

He also stressed that he always sought to include others so that no one felt excluded.

After learning of the tragedy, family, friends and community members organized a GoFundMe campaign that has raised more than $63,000 to help the family with expenses and allow them to grieve.

"Thank you to everyone who has donated so we can take the time to grieve our son and figure out how to move forward. Thank you for caring about my little one," the mother wrote.

In addition, family and neighbors called a candlelight vigil in Squalicum Creek Park to pay tribute to the minor and accompany his loved ones.
