Florida man accused of trying to steal medical helicopter after causing road accident
The suspect lost control of his truck, left two people seriously injured and attempted to board a medical evacuation aircraft
A man was arrested in Florida after being accused of trying to take a medical helicopter in the middle of an emergency operation deployed after a road accident that he allegedly caused himself.
The incident occurred around midnight Friday on northbound I-75, according to local authorities.
According to the preliminary investigation, Riley Ferrer was driving a truck when he lost control of the vehicle, left the road and hit another car before overturning in a wooded area, FOX 13 reported.
As a result of the crash, two people suffered serious injuries and a medical helicopter was requested to transport them to a care center.
He attempted to board the aircraft during the rescue
The Hernando County Sheriff's Office temporarily closed traffic lanes to allow the helicopter to land.
While paramedics and rescuers prepared patients for airlift, Ferrer allegedly attempted to enter and seize the aircraft.
The authorities indicated that the attempt was not successful and that agents later managed to control the situation.
After being detained, Ferrer was placed inside a patrol car and taken to Tampa General Hospital in Brooksville for medical evaluation.
He faces several charges
The Florida Highway Patrol noted that the detainee initially refused to enter the medical center and later also resisted during processing.
Once he was discharged, he was transferred to the Hernando County Detention Center, where — according to authorities — he continued to resist.
Ferrer faces three counts of resisting arrest without violence and an additional count of unlawful entry into an occupied vehicle.
Jail records indicate he was held on $3,000 bail on the resisting charges, although he remains held without bail on the charge related to attempting to board the aircraft.
So far, the health status of the other two people involved in the accident has not been officially reported.
The authorities have also not publicly confirmed statements attributed to the detainee regarding alleged religious motivations linked to the event.
