Starting September 1, driving and driver education classes in Texas will find a change. A new provision requires detailed information on how to drive safely in construction zones.
The measure is contemplated in the law SB 1366, approved by the Texas Legislature. This seeks to reinforce the preparation of drivers for the risks that exist in areas where road works are carried out.

What will the new driving classes in Texas have?
According to a statement from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), programs will be required to explain, at a minimum, how to safely traverse a construction or maintenance zone.
Additionally, drivers must learn how to identify signallers or workers directing traffic and how to recognize traffic signs used in these areas.
They must also be aware of the consequences of violating traffic regulations in a construction zone, including the dangers of causing injury, death, or property damage, as well as the penalties and fines that may apply.
The decision to implement this update in driving classes responds to the 27,900 accidents and 215 deaths in work zones that were recorded on Texas roads in 2024 alone. According to the TDLR, in 2023 there were nearly 26,300 accidents and 192 deaths.
Who does the change in driving classes in Texas apply to?
The modification covers two types of courses regulated by the TDLR: Driver Education Courses and Driving Safety Courses. The first corresponds to the training programs necessary for those who learn to drive and seek to obtain a license, including courses for adolescents and those aimed exclusively at adults.
The second is aimed at education about road safety and knowledge of traffic laws. In Texas, these courses may also be used in certain circumstances related to the resolution of traffic violations.
The TDLR also clarifies that not all drivers will have to retake classes due to this modification. The requirement applies only to courses that begin on or after September 1, 2026.
