Out with ICE! High school students in Los Angeles protest
Hundreds leave classrooms to protest downtown and express anger against raids
Melanie Cruz and Estela Romero, 13, both from Los Angeles, joined hundreds of other high school students from across the city and county on February 4 to march and protest in support of Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE)'s ( ICE ) request.
I made the decision to struggle now for all the life that ICE has taken and the children it has separated from their families. The ICE needs to understand that this is wrong, and they are going to fight for our neighborhood to prevent these raids," said Melanie, who is in seventh grade at a middle class in the Eagle Rock neighborhood and whose name they chose to keep quiet.
Estela claimed that everyone in her home immigrated from Mexico to the United States, and both they and their parents are afraid to leave the city.
" It aggravates me that they fear doing things that are customary. "
“So I came here because I want to fight for my family, my grandparents, and my culture," Estela said. Both students showed great maturity for their age. They were perhaps among the youngest participants in the demonstration around the city's main square, which brought together students from the Los Angeles Unified School District. Middle and high school students marched from City Hall to the federal building to protest the aggressive immigration raids that have resulted in the arrest of hundreds of immigrants and the deaths of two US citizens in Minneapolis: Renee Good and nurse Alex Pretti. Good was killed by an ICE agent on January 7, and Pretti, an intensive care unit nurse, was shot by Border Patrol agents on January 24. According to a Department of Homeland Security report, more than 10,000 undocumented immigrants were arrested in the Los Angeles area between June and December 2025. Melanie confessed to feeling frustrated and sad, saying that before Trump, Los Angeles used to be a beautiful and peaceful city “This violence destroys our peace; it feels like a war, like a war against everything,” she said. And it's terrible to see people dying fighting for their lives.”
She revealed that her parents fear immigrants and are also worried.
I am here to combat today because I didn't allow my family to live like this.
The two young women screamed" Fuck you! " while holding smaller Mexican flags. " Hell you,"
" We're in middle school. Being thus fresh, it's inappropriate for us to witness all of this. Folks are dying all over the world. They murder honest people who are attempting to defend themselves. Their answer to our quiet protests is aggressive.
Melanie remarked," It's ridiculous, and kids didn't even go to college for fear of being separated from their parents. Even though I'm not related to anyone who has witnessed this happen, it hurts me so many. " It hurts"! .
When younger students took advantage of corner to keep classes and stage demonstrations, the mobilization started at 10 am.
What do we want? chanted phrases as they marched. No Righteousness, no Peace, and ICE up.
There were also students from Felicitas and Gonzalo Mendez High School, Garfield High School, Francisco Bravo Medical Magnet, and even high school students from Koreatown, Eagle Rock, Pico Union, and yet Compton.
The strike is student-organized, calm, and focused on upholding our constitutional rights to training and our communities. The organizers posted a message on Instagram," We acted with unity, strategy, and purpose for our communities and our coming. "
Five Latino individuals, 14 to 16, who hid their identities and said they were angry because ICE was separating families, marched in frustration.
They are separating their kids from their fathers and mothers, they claim. That is incredibly" Bad! " One of the lads said something. Another younger gentleman claimed that President Trump doesn't care about people and does whatever he wants, not just here but throughout the world. The youth shared their excitement over taking to the streets to protest the emigration raids. What message do they want to convey to President Trump and his management? Fuck ICE, hell them, and leave the United States! " The five kids nearly yelled in harmony. " A 16-year-old senior high school student, the girl of immigrant families, claimed she was encouraged to rally for those who cannot and that she was the daughter of immigrants. There are numerous things going on, including random murders. Because it's so unfortunate, I feel quite moved. We're just trying to protest, so these stops, but we can't do much more than opposition. They're really killing people for no reason, she continued. She requested that President Trump quit conducting his brutal operations. What did he think if he were staying in our position? We are all people, and we are not extraterrestrials. We all experience emotions. It's a sad circumstance. They are "killing us without cause," they say. She claimed that they were given permission by their teachers to protest and that they had not been given any instructions that they would be suspended or faced with any other consequences. This student claimed that this was their second protest since the Los Angeles assaults first started. " After all". Why are our income being levied against us if we pay them? We have greatly improved. Nearly half of the properties that surround us in the city center were constructed by immigrants. " Two young women and a young man marched up and said they joined the student participation because they think the isolation of people is unfair," they said. What we're seeing every day is truly terrible. She said to a 17-year-old child," Even those who were born here are suffering. A 16-year-old scholar said she participated to support those who were hesitant to leave. We're simply asking them to grant us the opportunity to pursue the American dream, she said. A student who is 18 years old claimed that ICE is merely detaining people who looks Hispanic or belongs to any other ethnic group other than white.
Our participation now supports the trigger because schools are losing individuals, and they should work to stop ICE because their pupils are leaving. support the right of individuals to rally.
Nevertheless, he did point out that the classroom is the safest place for kids to go.
