The Los Angeles District Attorney's Office formally announced the indictment of Nick Reiner, son of director Rob Reiner, on two counts of premeditated murder in the deaths of his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner.

The news shook Hollywood and the Brentwood community, where the couple was found dead in their home last Sunday.

According to information provided by prosecutor Nathan Hochman at a press conference, Nick Reiner, 32, faces charges of aggravated murder due to the “special circumstance” of killing more than one person. He is also accused of using a deadly weapon, allegedly a knife, to commit the crimes.

These charges carry a possible sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, or even the death penalty, should the prosecution decide to seek it later.

For the time being, the accused is in custody without bail.

Rob Reiner, 78, known for his work on iconic films such as When Harry Met Sally and The Princess Bride, and his wife, photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were found dead in their Brentwood residence with apparent stab wounds.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) arrested Nick Reiner hours after the discovery, about 12 miles from the home, without resistance.

Although police have not yet revealed a possible motive for the double homicide, preliminary reports indicate that Nick Reiner, the couple's middle son, had a history of addiction and had struggled with mental health issues, even experiencing homelessness in the past.

Friends of the family told the Los Angeles Times that Reiner and his son Nick argued Saturday night at a house party by Conan O'Brien, and many people noticed that the filmmaker's son was behaving strangely at the party. Formal charges are expected to be filed in court as soon as the accused is medically cleared to appear.
