Emma Selvidge, a 19-year-old girl from Oklahoma, woke up in the early morning hours of April 2 with a lump on her forehead, initially attributed to a simple insect bite, that grew worse. His quick action in seeking medical attention showed the seriousness of his situation.

Despite receiving initial treatment and leaving the emergency room, Selvidge experienced rapid degeneration of his condition. The appearance of an abscess led to the need for surgery, which revealed additional problems that further complicated his health, Newsweek reported his case.

Doctors diagnosed it as probably a spider bite and treated her for a possible infection: They gave her an injection, prescribed antibiotics, and sent her home.

But then Selvidge's situation worsened with multiple relapses, generating permanent vision problems and constant pain. Despite various tests, the diagnosis of mild transverse sinus stenosis did not explain the root cause of his symptoms.

Nightmare and wake-up call

“Within about 10 minutes, the swelling got considerably worse and started to spread towards my eye,” Selvidge said of what he experienced after the sting. “It was terrifying to see how it changed so quickly,” reported Newsweek.

She went to work the next day and, when she finished late, she had to go to the emergency room because the swelling was getting worse. Finally, I had to have surgery to drain the abscess that had formed.

The nightmare continued: "About a month after the first hospitalization, the swelling came back. It was devastating because I thought I was finally recovering. The second time, it gave me serious sinus infections and constant headaches."

As if that were not enough, he says: "Then, just two weeks after leaving the hospital, it flared up for the third time. Each relapse generated more fear and uncertainty, especially because no one could tell me exactly why it kept happening."

He had a third relapse, which left him with permanent vision problems and severe headaches that lasted for days. He also felt that not enough blood was reaching his brain, which were the most difficult symptoms to cope with.

Selvidge has used social media (@emmaselvidge0) to advocate for the importance of trusting intuition and seeking medical attention for any unusual symptoms. Her experience highlights the need to question diagnoses and actively participate in one's own health care.

"This experience completely changed my life. What I thought was just an insect bite turned into multiple hospitalizations, surgery, countless doctor appointments and persistent health problems. Not knowing what causes it has been one of the most difficult parts, because there is the fear that it could happen again," he warns with concern.

Factors that increase the risk of infection

The factors that most increase the risk of an insect sting becoming serious are a previous allergy to the venom, having had a more intense reaction to previous stings, and, in the case of bees or wasps, exposure to multiple stings.

Important factors

When to seek help

Seek urgent care if you develop difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, dizziness, fainting, fever with local worsening, pus, or severe pain in the area.
