They investigate alleged beer consumption by minors at school graduation in Oaxaca
Oaxaca authorities investigate the alleged consumption of alcohol by minors at a graduation party in Santiago Quiavicuzas
The State Attorney for the Protection of the Rights of Girls, Boys and Adolescents of the State of Oaxaca (Prodennao) opened an investigation into the alleged consumption of alcoholic beverages by minors during a school closing ceremony in the indigenous community of Santiago Quiavicuzas, municipality of San Carlos Yautepec, after videos spread on social networks showed students celebrating with cans and bottles that apparently contained beer.
The state agency reported that it initiated the corresponding actions through file 1039/PRODENNAO/SAAJ/2026, with the purpose of clarifying the circumstances in which the events occurred and determining whether there were violations of the rights of girls, boys and adolescents.
According to official information, the Attorney General's Office maintains monitoring and coordination actions with the competent authorities to gather information about what happened during the celebration at the end of the 2025-2026 school year, held on the municipal field of this indigenous community in the Sierra Sur of Oaxaca.
Videos spread on social networks triggered the investigation
The case came to light after attendees of the event shared various videos on digital platforms. In the recordings, minors are observed at the end-of-year party with beer cans and bottles.
The images also show that the celebration took place in the presence of adults, a situation that raised questions and motivated the intervention of the authorities in charge of protecting children's rights.
So far, Prodennao has not confirmed whether the minors consumed alcoholic beverages, so the investigation will determine what happened and the possible responsibilities derived from the case.
They report presence of educational authorities
According to testimonies from people who attended the ceremony, a tarp with the logos of the State Institute of Public Education of Oaxaca (IEEPO) and the General Directorate of Native Peoples of Oaxaca was installed at the site.
Likewise, they pointed out that supervisory personnel from the Sierra Sur school zone were present during the event, elements that are part of the information that the authorities review as part of the investigations.
Until now, none of these institutions has issued a public position on the events recorded during the celebration.
Prodennao will follow up on the case
The Attorney General's Office reiterated that the open file will allow us to know in greater detail how the event unfolded and establish whether there were omissions or responsibilities on the part of those who participated in the organization of the school closure.
The investigations continue and based on the results obtained, the authority will determine the corresponding actions in accordance with the current legal framework.
School closures preserve traditions in Oaxaca
End-of-course ceremonies represent one of the most important events for Oaxacan communities, where in addition to recognizing the academic effort of students, various family traditions are maintained.
One of the most deeply rooted customs is for graduates to choose a godfather or godmother, who usually gives a gift as a token of recognition for the completion of their studies.
Gifts can range from flowers and stuffed animals to electronic devices or presents of greater economic value. Recently, in Bajos de Chila, a young graduate received from his godmother a necklace made with bills whose value exceeded 8 thousand pesos, a scene that also went viral on social networks and reflects the traditions that accompany graduations in different regions of Oaxaca.
