Young man dies after falling from abandoned building used as a Stranger Things set in Georgia
Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the incident and reiterate the danger of entering locked properties
Leah Palmirotto, 19, died after falling from an abandoned building located at the former Georgia Institute of Mental Health, on Emory University's Briarcliff campus in DeKalb County. The incident occurred around 1:00 a.m. on Friday, according to local police. According to authorities, the young woman entered the property with a group of friends after climbing a fence that restricts access to the property, which is currently closed to the public. For reasons still under investigation, Palmirotto fell from a considerable height and died at the scene.
A building known for audiovisual productions
The building, known as Building A, has been used as a location in several film and television productions, including The Vampire Diaries and the Netflix series Stranger Things, where it appears as the fictional Hawkins National Laboratory.
Despite its notoriety, the building is in a state of disrepair and is not open to the public, which represents significant structural risks.
Family reactions
The young woman's father, Todd Palmirotto, expressed his grief in statements to local media and remembered his daughter as someone passionate about photography and urban exploration. “He loved exploring and photographing abandoned buildings,” the family said in a GoFundMe campaign. “Simply doing things that normal 19-year-olds do ended in pure devastation,” the family wrote in the message. The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office reiterated its call to the public, especially young people, not to enter closed or abandoned properties due to the risks involved. The investigation continues to determine exactly how the accident occurred.
